Effective Teeth Whitening near Swindon at The Cottage Dental and Implant Clinic

Are you fed up of hiding your smile because of stains and discolouration? Do you long for a celebrity smile?

White teeth are an essential part of looking and feeling your best so it’s important to understand why our teeth become stained and consider some of the ways we can fight discolouration.

What causes discoloured teeth?

There are two main types of tooth discolouration:

Extrinsic

This type of discolouration occurs when the enamel is stained by external sources such as coffee, red wine, dark fruits and smoking. Stains form on the surface of the tooth and can darken the tooth shade.

Intrinsic

This is when the layer below the enamel (the dentin) becomes darker or more yellow and could be the result of antibiotics, tooth trauma or exposure to too much fluoride as a child. Age also plays a part here, as when a person ages the outer enamel becomes thinner and allows the dentin to show through.

Are Sensitive Teeth Causing You Pain?

patient discussion at Cottage Dental, Swindon

The Cottage Dental and Implant Clinic in Wootton Bassett, Swindon can help.

Sensitive teeth are a very common problem for many people and can make eating and drinking a painful experience. Whether it causes the occasional twinge or much more intense pain, sensitivity may be a result of diet, poor dental care or could be a warning sign for more serious dental problems.

Desensitising toothpastes can help to ease the pain but it is important to understand why the sensitivity is occurring and look for more natural solutions.

Here at your local dentist near Swindon, we understand that tooth sensitivity can affect anyone and we aim not only to provide treatment for current pain but also promote a healthy oral hygiene routine to prevent sensitivity from occurring in the first place.

What causes tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the protective layer of enamel gets thinner and exposes the dentin underneath. This often happens at the gum line where the enamel is thinner and results in a reduction of protection for the tooth and root. Although some studies have suggested that it affects women more than men, and occurs more commonly in people between the ages of 20 and 40, here at The Cottage Dental and Implant Clinic we have found that it can affect anybody and have treated people of all ages.

So if sensitivity is caused by the thinning of enamel, what causes it to wear away? There are many causes but the main ones are:

Wisdom teeth removal at The Cottage Dental and Implant Clinic

complex dentistry

Oral surgery for problematic wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth (or third molars) usually begin to erupt between the ages of 17 and 25 and have developed a reputation for causing problems! So do they deserve this reputation?

In a word, yes. For many people they can cause pain, swelling, cysts, infections and can even be responsible for damaging neighbouring teeth.

So why do we have this problem? Some people believe it is down to evolution and a result of our jaws shrinking with the number of teeth staying the same. Others believe it is simply due to individual jaw space and teeth placement.

Whatever the cause, it remains the case that for some people fitting 32 teeth neatly into the gum line just isn’t possible and this is where the problems start. If a wisdom tooth doesn’t have enough space to develop properly, or if it comes through turned to the side or tilted, it can become impacted against the teeth in front of it. At The Cottage Dental and Implant Clinic near Swindon, we see the damage that impacted teeth can have and encourage patients to contact the clinic at the first signs of problems.

So what symptoms should you look out for?

  • Swelling
  • Bad breath / unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Difficulty or pain when opening the jaw
  • Pain when eating

Even if symptoms go away, it is still important to speak to your dentist as the relief may only be temporary.

Healthy Gums For Healthy Teeth!

Your gums – the foundation of a healthy mouth

We know (because we are told almost daily by toothpaste adverts) that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the UK. However, the causes and treatments are still an area of confusion for many people.

Gum disease is a very common problem for adults so it’s vital that people are aware of the signs, symptoms and treatments available to combat it. Here at the Cottage Dental and Implant Clinic near Swindon we are focused on early detection and prevention but also have very effective techniques for dealing with all stages of the condition.

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease is typically caused by a build up of plaque on the teeth. This unpleasant sticky substance is full of bacteria which, if not removed, can irritate your gums causing swelling, soreness and sometimes bleeding. Certain foods can cause a very acidic environment in the mouth and in conjunction with plaque, can lead to a breaking down of tooth enamel and subsequently result in tooth decay and tooth loss. Although plaque can be brushed away, if it is left for too long it can turn into tartar which can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist. The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis and if this isn’t diagnosed and treated quickly it can develop into a much more serious condition called periodontitis.

One of the most popular ways of dealing with this problem is by using muscle relaxants which work to reversibly paralyse the muscles in the affected areas. Here at your local Wootton Bassett Clinic near Swindon, we are proud to offer a highly popular and well known treatment which has been helping people combat those pesky signs of ageing skin for many years – BOTOX®.

Sustainable tooth replacement solutions in Swindon

Do you suffer the misery of missing teeth? Do you hide your smile for fear of people noticing the gap or gaps in your teeth? Or maybe your dentures are loose and you’re desperate for a way to secure them? Here at The Cottage Dental and Implant Clinic in Wootton Basset near Swindon, we have the answer – dental implants.

Our implant treatments are carried out by Dr. Elmanharawy, a Royal College of Surgeons qualified implant surgeon who has successfully placed over 5000 dental implants in in the last 20 years. Through the combination of Dr. Elmanharawy’s expertise and a dedicated team of dental professionals, we are able to offer impartial advice, effective treatments and exceptional after-care.

So how do dental implants work?

A dental implant takes the place of a natural root and is usually shaped like a screw or a cylinder. A socket is drilled into the target gum area and the implant is then screwed or tapped into position. By achieving close contact with the surrounding bone, we are able to ensure immediate stability which then increases over time as the bone grows. Once fitted, the dental implant provides a strong foundation for crowns, bridges or dentures.
